How this converter works

Torque is a measure of rotational force — how hard an engine twists its crankshaft. This tool converts between the metric unit (newton-metres, Nm) and the imperial unit (pound-feet, lb-ft). Enter one value and the other is calculated instantly.

1 lb-ft = 1.3558179483314003 Nm
Nm = lb-ft × 1.3558179483314003
lb-ft = Nm ÷ 1.3558179483314003

Worked example: a hatchback producing 250 Nm of torque delivers 250 ÷ 1.3558179483314003 = 184.39 lb-ft. Going the other way, 100 Nm ÷ 1.3558179483314003 = 73.76 lb-ft.

Why torque matters for cars

Torque is what you feel when a car pulls strongly from low revs — it is the shove in the back when a turbo diesel or a big naturally aspirated engine gets going. Higher peak torque, especially delivered low in the rev range, usually means effortless overtaking and easier towing. Horsepower, by contrast, describes how quickly that force can be sustained as engine speed rises.

Frequently asked questions

Is lb-ft the same as ft-lb?
Numerically yes — both describe the same unit of torque. Engineers tend to write lb-ft (pound-feet) for torque to distinguish it from ft-lb (foot-pounds), which is sometimes used for energy or work, but the conversion value is identical.
Why do European cars quote Nm and American cars quote lb-ft?
It is simply a metric versus imperial convention. 1 lb-ft is about 1.356 Nm, so a 300 lb-ft engine is roughly 407 Nm. This converter handles both directions so you can compare figures from either tradition.
Is more torque always better?
It depends what you need. High torque low in the rev range suits towing and relaxed driving; high horsepower suits high-revving performance. The two work together, which is why the power-to-weight ratio is a useful comparison tool.
Are the results rounded?
Yes. Calculations use full precision internally and only the displayed values are rounded to two decimal places.
