How this calculator works

Bore is the diameter of each cylinder; stroke is how far the piston travels up and down inside it. The volume a single piston sweeps — its swept displacement — is the circular area of the bore multiplied by the stroke. Multiply by the number of cylinders for the engine’s total displacement.

Convert bore and stroke to mm first (1 in = 25.4 mm)
Total cc = (π ÷ 4) × bore² × stroke × cylinders ÷ 1,000
Litres = cc ÷ 1,000
Cubic inches = cc ÷ 16.387064

Worked example: an 86 mm bore, 86 mm stroke and four cylinders gives (π ÷ 4) × 86² × 86 × 4 ÷ 1,000 = 1,998.2 cc (about 2.0 litres, or 121.9 ci).

What this does not tell you

Displacement describes the swept volume of the cylinders — nothing more. It does not determine horsepower, torque, compression ratio, or how an engine performs. Two engines of identical displacement can produce very different power depending on turbocharging, valve timing, compression and tuning.

This calculation also ignores combustion-chamber volume, so it is not the engine’s total cylinder volume, and it cannot be used to infer compression ratio.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between cc, litres and cubic inches?
They are all units of volume. 1,000 cc = 1 litre, and 1 cubic inch = 16.387 cc. Modern engines are usually described in litres; older American engines were often quoted in cubic inches.
Does a bigger bore or longer stroke increase displacement more?
Both increase it, but displacement scales with the square of the bore and only linearly with stroke — so a small increase in bore adds more displacement than the same increase in stroke.
Can I enter dimensions in inches?
Yes. Use the unit selector next to each field to switch between millimetres and inches; the calculator converts to millimetres before computing.
Are the results rounded?
Yes. Calculations use full precision internally and only the displayed values are rounded.
