How this calculator works
The calculator converts your distance and fuel economy into litres used, then multiplies by the fuel price. A return trip simply doubles the one-way distance before the calculation, and the optional passenger count divides the total cost evenly.
Litres used = distance (km) × consumption (L/100 km) ÷ 100
Price per litre (£) = price (p) ÷ 100, or price (£) directly
Total cost = litres used × price per litre
Cost per person = total cost ÷ number of people
Worked example: a 100 km journey at 8 L/100 km with fuel at £1.50 per litre uses 100 × 8 ÷ 100 = 8 litres, costing 8 × £1.50 = £12.
What this estimate covers
This is a fuel-only estimate. It does not include wear, depreciation, tolls, parking, or the effect of driving style, traffic, weather, load, or terrain — all of which change real-world consumption. The prices you enter are your own figures and are not presented as current pump prices.
